Farsi (Persian) is a subgroup of West Iranian languages that include the closely related Persian languages of Dari and Tajik. Today it is primarily spoken in Iran, Afghanistan and Tajikistan. Persian is the first language of about 55 percent of the population in Iran, and is the country's official language.
Modern Farsi is spoken by over 40 million people in Iran and another 5 million in Afghanistan. In Afghanistan it is known as Dari. A variety of Farsi called Tajik is spoken in the Tajikistan, and is written in the Cyrillic alphabet. Dari which is mainly spoken in Afghanistan is quite similar to Farsi. The dialectal variation between Farsi and Dari has been described as analogous to that between European French and Canadian French. Dari is more conservative in maintaining vowel distinctions that have been lost in Farsi.
English words of Farsi origin include shawl, pajama, taffeta, khaki, kiosk, divan, lilac, jasmine, julep, jackal, caravan, bazaar, checkmate, and dervish.
