Factors to take into account when translating your business card

Having a business card, that speaks to your potential client in their own language, helps to cut across cultural barriers.

However, a poorly translated card could do more harm than good. It could create a bad impression of your company, putting an end to the relationship before it’s started.
Here are some do’s and don'ts to ensure your business card translation is of an excellent standard:

  • Do use a translator or translation agency. They will be experts in this field, aware of the culture and etiquettes of your potential clients.
  • Don't add too much information. Your name, title, company and contact details are adequate. Keep it short and simple.
  • Do make sure that your title is translated precisely. Some times complicated titles can pose a problem. It is imperative that the receiver knows exactly who and what you are, within your company.
  • Don't translate your address. This will help the postman to deliver your mail to the right place.
  • Do Transliterate all names, whether company or individual, to aid in proper pronunciation.
  • Don’t forget to write dates in the local format.
  • Do remember to use terms which are politically correct and in the right language for the region. For example, people in Taiwan use traditional Chinese while people in China use Simplified Chinese.
  • Do try to incorporate the cultural touch in your cards which could help your potential client to warm to you. For instance, the use of gold and red in China is considered lucky.
  • Do be aware of how you should offer your business cards and greet the client in accordance with their culture. This is an important do that could help you to forge a lasting business bond.
